After reaching our northern most spot on the coast (Maine), it was time to start heading west. We spent a miserable, wet, cold weekend in Vermont before reaching New York again. Our first stop was Lake George where we spent some time hiking, swimming, and celebrating Haddie’s 8th birthday.

Our depressing weekend in Vermont inspired us to find somewhere fun to stay the next week. We had had enough of cold and we also wanted Haddie’s birthday to feel special. We found a great resort near Lake George that was just the ticket! Moose Hillock camp resort was a perfect place to welcome summer and celebrate Haddie. The kids had been looking forward to swimming for a couple of weeks. We southerners are not accustomed to waiting until after Memorial Day for the pools to open!

On Haddie’s birthday, we picked up Happy Meals for lunch, went swimming for a few hours, then had pizza and watched Raya and the Last Dragon back at the campsite. Unicorn birthday cake topped off a great day!

Our next stop took us to Grand Island, NY. We enjoyed lots more pool time and other recreation at this fantastic campground but what brought us here was Niagara Falls.

It was a warm, sunny day and after standing in line for about a half hour, it was our turn to don the classic blue ponchos and step aboard the Maid of the Mist.

The boat moves very fast and we quickly found ourselves face to face with the Falls. The strong, misty breeze felt nice after such a long wait in the sun and the kids seemed to relish the entire experience. I hope it is something they will always remember.
